Supporting small-scale organic and fair trade wine production
Fair tradeTrade in products that have been certified and carry a fair trade label. An example of this is a farmer’s cooperative that collectively sells its cocoa to a fair trade organization.
GreenPromotes and/or supports the protection of the environment. An example of this is an organic farming cooperative.
La Riojana Cooperativa Vitivinifrutícola de La Rioja Ltda (La Riojana) is the first Fairtrade-certified winery in Argentina and the world’s largest producer of organic fair trade wine. La Riojana produces wine, grape juice and olive oil for both the local and international market.
The cooperative was founded in Chilecito, a small town in the north-western province of La Rioja, in 1940. La Riojana has more than 500 members (2015), mostly small-scale grape farmers with less than three hectares of land whose livelihoods depend on grape production.
Owing to a lack of bargaining power, members rely on the cooperative for better prices and marketing opportunities. The cooperative also provides members with access to services such as transport, loans and free technical assistance.
La Riojana has a positive impact on local communities, particularly in the field of health and education. By way of example, fair trade premiums have been invested in a new water supply in the isolated village of Tilimuqui and in the construction of a high school specialized in agricultural studies.
La Riojana Cooperativa Vitivinifruticola de la Rioja Ltda has been an Oikocredit partner since 2015. It is the first fair trade wine cooperative ever financed by Oikocredit.Download this project as a PDF
